Maybe it was the perfect mix of old school and new or maybe it was the long ten-year wait (Last performing in Australia at the 2014 Soundwave festival), whatever it was Filter exceeded expectations last night in Melbourne at The Croxton. There’s no denying the near capacity crowd walked away happy and even after front man Richard Patrick had stated they don’t do encores the fans were still chanting for one more song! On the topic of Patrick, he has not missed a beat and still full of energy at 55 years young. At one stage stating “If Mick Jagger can do it, why can’t I?” In reference to a long career on stage, and if their latest album “The Algorithm” is anything to go by, then Richard Patrick and Filter are not going away anytime soon!

Filter kicked off the night with “You Walk Away” from their 2002 album “The Amalgamut” which set the tone for a wild night of live music. There was something that little bit extra special when “(Can’t you) Trip Like I Do” was played, you almost had to remind yourself it was 2024 and not the late 90’s as the nostalgia was running high. What an ultimate collaboration with The Crystal Method (TCM), who also recently featured on The Underground Podcast! You know we had to discuss this track with Scott Kirkland of TCM, who had very fond memories of recording the song with Filter that featured on the Spawn soundtrack:

Nostalgia is big in 2024 and fans were definitely not disappointed with the band busting out their mega hits including Take a Picture, American Cliché, Welcome to The Fold, Hey Man Nice Shot and more. Don’t get it mistaken though, Filter are not stuck in the past and riding the high of previous albums. As touched on earlier their latest record “The Algorithm” was right up there with 2023’s best and hearing the likes of Face Down, The Drowning, For The Beaten and Obliteration live was an absolute highlight. The Melbourne crowd was even lucky enough to get a bonus track that wasn’t on the set list in “So I Quit”!

There was certainly no quitting in the crowd that seemed to have a very diverse age range from your older hats right through to a fresh faced bunch of younger fans in their late teens/early 20’s, once again stapling Filter as a band of not just the past, but the future as well. Hats off to Melbourne for having the biggest crowd so far on The Algorithm world tour, it’s time for the rest of Australia to step up and follow suit. Do yourself a favour and catch Filter live!
